Why water damage happens differently in the high desert
Across a normal year, Twentynine Palms collects roughly 3.87 inches of precipitation by NOAA's 1991 to 2020 normals, with August wettest at 0.65 inches. That sounds harmless until a monsoon cell dumps a large share of a year's rain in under an hour onto hard, dry ground that cannot absorb it.
The July 2024 monsoon showed it, as county public works recorded significant flooding of roads and flood control facilities, mostly in Twentynine Palms itself. A Los Angeles Times report added that many residents hit by the storm lived beyond flood zones and held no flood policy, so the first call afterward is often about cost as much as cleanup.
The same dry climate hides slower problems too. A pinhole supply line leak or a clogged air conditioner condensate line can soak a wall for weeks without a single drip on the floor. By the time a stain shows, the drywall behind it may need to come out, and a leak that long often needs [[mold remediation]] as well.
